The living are burdened with responsibility for those who have died. New Zealand can take strength from Cambodia, a country to whom tragedy is no stranger, reaching out in communion as each of them comes to terms with the torment of loss and bereavement.

    My refugeeness

My father would harbour a modern sense of can-do-ism and irreverence for tradition throughout his life. The Greek population is trying to cope with the consequences of three decades of greed and irresponsibility. My middle son is in the Army; my youngest son is a fire fighter. Both have had their salaries cut by a total of 3000 euros for the year, and more cuts may follow.

The women assemble to sing, dance, tell stories; thus the elders induct younger women into the religious knowledge and rituals that are shared across a wide area. Yuwani Annie's origin story blends a Yanyuwa version with the biblical Adam and Eve story.

    Disagreeing with Gerard Henderson

    • Bruce Duncan

Dr Henderson does Maritain a grave injustice in so cavalierly dismissing him as favouring the 'you-beaut idea to advocate Catholic/communist dialogue'. Messiah Mandela's miracle moment

I clearly remember what I was doing the day Nelson Mandela walked free from prison. The behemoth apartheid state shifted so thoroughly and so smoothly that even the erratic events of the past 20 years have done little to diminish South Africa's reputation as a miracle nation.

Samson and Delilah is an ode to Alice Springs and its extremes; an ethereal love story against a backdrop of addiction, violence and displacement. Racism is not an explicit presence, but it is there, a foul breath that muggies the air.

    Letter from Zimbabwe

    • Oskar Wermter
    • 30 January 2009

A young man, well educated, with several diplomas in his pocket, pestered me about getting funds to do a course in South Africa. Not because he needs that course, but merely to get out of Zimbabwe. The rats are leaving the ship.
