One of our biggest challenges – tackling climate change – has resulted from the failures of free markets. But Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and other Australian policy makers remain uncertain about how, and to what extent, governments should intervene in the operations of the capitalist system.

Now is the moment for political leadership

Even senior traditional hard men of the Liberal Party like Bill Heffernan and Shane Stone have indicated that it is time to act. It is time for Brendan Nelson to draw the line so that we can move on, committed to reconciliation and improvement in Aboriginal health, education, and life expectancy.

    Afghan stranger's homecoming

    • Tim Kroenert
    • 23 January 2008

Amir returns home to confront the guilt from his childhood. He finds the Taliban is in power, and his home city of Kabul lies in waste. The film's heavy-handed pathos detracts from the political sub-plot.

The hard life of Christians in Bethlehem

    • Abe Ata
    • 13 December 2007

The situation of Christians in Bethlehem is difficult, and many are leaving. Respect for politicians who represent all of us is crucial

We have learned that the damage caused by sexual abuse often continues for decades and into future generations. We can hope that Government interventions will make a long-term difference, but such complex issues cannot be reduced to a simple absolute: ‘the child must come first’.

The Prime Minister has said, “We are dealing with children of the tenderest age who have been exposed to the most terrible abuse”. He asks, “What matters more: the constitutional niceties, or the care and protection of young children?" It is not a choice of one or the other.

Say 'no' to nuclear – but not for the usual reasons

    • Les Coleman
    • 15 May 2007
    8 Comments

Opponents of nuclear power in Australia most often use environmental and economic arguments. The real problem with establishing a nuclear power industry is that it is a hugely complex and dangerous technology, and Australia has a poor record in safely managing even relatively simple technologies.

By supporting and sustaining the holocaust unfolding in Zimbabwe, the South African Government has aligned itself with the ranks of evil. FIFA has no choice but to find a new location for football World Cup.

Respect for human rights requires debt cancellation

    • Angelica Hannan

To address the problem of Third World debt, citizens of developed countries need to place the satisfaction of human needs at the heart of government policy. A history of poor governance, greed, and cultural imperialism are at the core of the Global North’s exploitation of the South.

    Migrants already know about loneliness

Our social networks underpin those casual salutations–"have a good weekend" or a "big night", or the jabber of mobile phones or texting. But they're increasingly elusive in today's world, as migrants already know.
